Little is known about Alfred Richardson Barber, although he is listed in a number of reference books covering the 19th Century. He lived in Colchester towards the end of the 19th Century and his career flourished between 1879 and 1893. Barber specialized in animal and still life paintings.

This piece is a very fine example of the artists work and shows a skill in understanding the complex art of animal painting.
